History of the 1932 House

In 1932 Heins Crüys bought ground in Walvis Bay, Erf 260 on the corner of 8th street west and 3rd road as still known today.  13 May 1932 he started construction of his house and horse stables.  From the horse stables only the outlines can still be seen today, known as garage no. 3 and the self-catering unit no. 2 on the right side of the building.

Magdalena Maria Birkenmayer was born in 1885 in Germany by birth name Natterer and first came to Namibia in 1911.  She became locally know by her singing and dancing performances, and published poetry under the pen name “Margarethe Lindenmüller”.

She lived with her husband Anton on a small farm named Birkenfels in the lower Swakop River.  Farm Birkenfels is a small desert farm about 25km east of Swakopmund.  The farm has a long history back to the colonial era of the Germans.  Today, no farming are done there anymore.  The farm is used just for living.  They left the farm and bought the house and stables from Mr Crüys in 1955.  The stables where reconstructed and was then joint as part of the house by garages as still can be seen today.

In April 1967 Mr T.J.W. Coeln bought the building in a wrecked state.  Renovations were started and were only completed in September 1972.

After the death of T.J.W. Coeln his two sons Gerhard and Peter inherited the house.  The brothers started construction on top of the garages, today known as rooms 5 and 6 in July 1990.

The building was finally sold to our directors Michael Birch and Peter Kroon in April 2010, renovated into this lovely guesthouse which embraces you with comfort and warmth.

We at 1932 House welcomes you and wishes you a pleasant stay.
